Did you remember seeing in the 1984 Olympics in Cherry-evo the cherry pit spitting competitions? They were awesome. But it comes to us now that some competitors may have had an untold advantage and it wasn’t steroids.
We found out this week. Our cherry tree is loaded with cherries- our biggest crop ever. We had a pit spit off. Kyle, who is strong as an ox and fit as Arnold, though warmed up, his tongue posed a problem pertaining particularly to pit power. He can’t curl his tongue! It’s genetic. Luke and I can and therefore reigned.
Perhaps at the next Olympics they should have two groups: those who can curl and those who can’t. If you’ve every watched “curling” in the Olympics with the guys sweeping the ice to propel their stone to the goal you may find tongue curling and pit spitting even more hair raising, edge of your seat exciting. Be there. Next event is Pitts-burg then it’s 2008 Bing-jing Olympics or Bust!

My oh my, look at that dish! I’ll eat it all and still be hungry”¦ but not so hungry that I’ll need to eat more. This dish is only about 200 calories, give or take, so it probably looks like it is more fattening than it is. Here’s the recipe:
- 2 corn tortillas — 120 calories
- 1 large sliced tomato — 20 calories
- 2 tbsp. parmesan — 40 calories
- 2 tbsp. pinto beans — 20 calories
- Jalapeños pepper slices — calories negligible
- Garlic salt — calories negligible
—–
Optional:
Mushrooms, onions, green or red peppers —œ calories negligible
Herbs (oregano, basil, pepper, etc) —œ calories negligible
Place in toaster oven until tortillas are crisy and then eat slowly so as not to burn your tongue. Follow this with a like hot jug of my ‘lemon and green tea especial’.
Enjoy!

Beware, owners of those plasma-dome thingies: I just discovered how to fry my own flesh with one.

If you’ve never played with a plasma globe before, the basic idea is that there’s a glass sphere* with a partial vacuum and a central electrode inside. When driven by a high-frequency, high-voltage AC current, ribbons of plasma reach out to the sides of the globe. Bringing a conductive object (such as one’s own hand) near the glass “attracts” the purple ribbons of light toward whatever it is. A slight warmth can be felt emanating from the dome after a short while. In a nutshell… cool!
Now, if you …Continue reading ‘Zap!!! …goes the finger’

I have always felt that it’s good to be capable of doing something better than good enough, even if you never actually do it. For example, even though you make a simple cupcake, you are able to make a multi-layer cake with all the frills and fancy stuff, (you know, the big, white cake of cake you roll in at divorce court) even if you don’t make it. Being able to have the power without using it to the extreme. Of course, the hard part about having the “power”, is that you can get sucked into it.
Now, I have a “problem” …Continue reading ‘A Neurotic Adventure’
Every year (or almost every year, depending on the year) we have a pizza party for the tenants. It’s shared housing but semi-seperate houses so usually one household doesn’t know the neighbors . . . well. That’s what the pizza part of the party is for! There’s something unique about it. You see, the ingredients of pizza all stick together when hot. The same is true for the people eating the pizza. Even though they (each household) don’t know each other, they kinda bond together like pizza does. Why? Well, since heat …Continue reading ‘Pizza! And Party!’

This morning we experienced Black Friday for the fourth time. It became a family tradition quite by chance in 2004, when we happened to go in to OfficeMax on Black Friday for some paper clips and ended up bringing back a ton of stuff. Most of it free or nearly free after rebates. We also got a deeply-discounted LCD monitor—our first. Hot dog! The next two years brought a few more LCD monitors, hard drives, memory, a digital camera and MP3 player for Mama, and who knows what else (I don’t). Back then, I enjoyed the novelty of waking up at 5am and buying all those low-priced ‘toys’. This year, however, I wasn’t feeling the spirit.

After our Thanksgiving dinner we all gathered ’round and checked out the Black Friday ads. I hung around for a while, for tradition’s sake, but soon left after seeing no “outrageous deals” on anything I/we were interested in. Kyle and Papa, on the other hand, were all over it. They …Continue reading ‘Black Friday 2007: An Abbott Tradition’

Years ago, Luke and I fished a lot on the wharf. However, that kinda petered out. Not just ’cause the wharf was over-fished, but I knew that I could never top the whopper I caught in 2003!

Yesterday was my 21st birthday. In honor of the American tradition of (to quote a friend) “getting hella drunk” when turning 21, we went to a place called 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall. The problem, however, is this: I don’t like the taste of alcohol.
I always feel like I’m drinking paint thinner (er, not that I would know what that tastes like…) and, while I’ve heard it tastes better the more inebriated you get, I’ve never been motivated enough to get to that point. So, sober I’ve stayed, despite my dad’s best efforts to …Continue reading ‘Luke turns 21′
