To pull or not to pull?

(Note: not my teeth.)

(Note: not my teeth.)

I need to decide whether I’m going to get my wisdom teeth extracted or not. My dentist recommended it, but they aren’t causing me any pain right now, and I could theoretically live my whole life with them (just barely) although I might regret having them later on when they start to rot. And I have to get a couple fillings in them anyway if I don’t get them out. So I’m leaning toward the surgery. The nail in the coffin (so to speak) might be this very calculation:

Assuming that I floss every day (more or less true) and it takes 3 seconds to floss each wisdom tooth (they’re hard to reach back there):
”¢ 3 seconds × 4 teeth = 12 seconds/day
”¢ 12 × 365.25 days in the year = 4380 seconds/year
”¢ 4380 · 3600 seconds/hour = 1.2 hours/year
”¢ 1.2 hours/year × 60 years (say I live to be 80) = 72 hours

So by getting my wisdom teeth out, I save about 72 hours of flossing time over my lifetime. According to Kyle’s account, it took him about three days to recover.
”¢ 15 waking hours a day × 3 days = 45 hours

Ӣ 45 < 72. Thus, having the surgery saves time.

*sigh*. There’s no getting around the math of it.

  • gosh, you logical types! :-)

  • Luke, I had all 4 of mine done at one time when I was 40. I was fine and dandy the day after it was done. The hole left over feels weird for a while, until you get used to it. You might also have a little residual tooth bits show up months afterward, but its no big deal.

I think it is better to do it now than later.

  • Hey Luke, why not get your adenoids done and your appendix out while you’re there.. i reckon you could save your self about 3 boxes of decongestient before diagnosis (not to mention the trips to the store to get them) and you could have a ‘funny’ surgery.
Why is it it funny i hear you ask? …
… cos it leaves you in stitches !! (that might only work as a joke in the UK, oh well :-) )

  • its painless…go to doctor slaughter in Watsonville..very good…terrible name

  • Hi Luke,

It’s your neighbor. Armando just got his out two weeks ago (2 of them) and felt pretty good by the next day! They were starting to rot and have problems and I know he’s so glad he did it—finally—at thirty-something. So I say go for it! I got mine out in my twenties.

    Good Luck!

  • Hey Kyle, my name is Kandy, I live in Trinidad & Tobago and I really love your calculation! I had 8 wisdom teeth pulled about 1 month ago. I see Bob (above) said that the hole feels weird. THAT IS SO TRUE!!!! Right now I have two holes on each side and it’s HORRIBLE! But it’s good to know they go away. Would you like to see my funny teeth? I’m sorry I didn’t scan the X-ray and now the dentist has it. You can check out my crazy story at http://jijineko.blogspot.com/2008/11/wisdom-teeth-adventures.html

Thanks! Take care- I hope you feel a lot better now.

  • My mistake, Luke, not Kyle :-( Sorry.
