Fiddle Holster

The Fiddle Holster: click for larger view

I want to play fiddle. With our method I am able to pick out melodies very easily. But the problem is that I have neck trouble and holding the fiddle under my chin is a no go. I put it in my gut but that seems to limit the mobility of my fingering hand. So I felt I needed to come up with something that would allow me to play somewhere be tween my chin and my gutt. I put on a sweatshirt and turned it around so the hood was handing from the front. I put the fiddle in there like a sack. I liked it. I went to my favorite thrift store and bought a light sweatshirt. I cut out the arms and the a lot of the bottom area. The problem was that when I put the fiddle in it it seemed to pull on my neck. Mind you this wouldn’t be a problem for the average bear but my neck has some real issues. I didn’t give up because I want to play. I then made the “fiddle holster”. I took it for a trial run last night when I went to my friends house to play a little and it went pretty well. There are a few adjustments but…I think I’ll stick with it.

very creative Leslie, way to go. Are you able to get the same kinda “sound” from the fiddle as you do when it is held under the chin ?

    Hi Bob,

Well…I can get a squeak from just about anywhere! I haven’t been playing long enough to really know but I think I will be able to. But last night I got together with 2 friends and we all played fiddles. I didn’t see any cats scratching at our windows so that was a good sign.

    Hi Leslie,
The fiddle holster looks like a cool idea. If you wanted to get the fiddle up higher, you could make a bandolier type holster that goes over your left shoulder. That may bother your neck, though. With the fiddle lower, it can be more difficult to finger with the left hand.
    Congratulations on starting to fiddle.
