Having It Your Way at Marini’s

Every once in a while, you experience a windfall of genius that leaves you almost breathless. Often, when we play on Pacific Avenue, we see that Marini’s is having a two-for-one special: two slices of pie for the price of one, two ice-cream cones, two cotton candies, etc. Every once and a while, it’ll be two coffee drinks for the price of one. Now, Marini’s has some delicious coffee drinks, like the Milky Way, which is a mocha-caramel drink with whipped cream and a slice of fudge on the rim. Heaven, except… I don’t like coffee. Twice, I joined Kyle and Papa in splitting two of these coffee drinks. I tried my best to enjoy them, but it was like having liver with your strawberries. Hard to enjoy the one in the presence of the other.

So, back to these windfalls of genius. Today* was another two-for-one-coffee day. Initially, I was advocating skipping out on the two-for-one deal altogether. I mean, why bother if you can’t really enjoy it? (OK, Papa and Kyle aren’t so taken aback by the coffee element, but still…) Then I realized… of course! I should order a Milky Way sans espresso! Genius, right? Kyle’s reaction: “Oh geez. Un-dibs on ordering.”

Well, I did it, and lo and behold, it was delicious! Basically, it was just hot chocolate with caramel flavor, plus whipped cream and fudge! And it even cost 75 cents less!

I don’t know if I was left breathless in the wake of my genius, but it was close.

* OK, not today. This is an old post… it’s not summer anymore and Marini’s doesn’t have the two-for-one specials. But we can pretend, right? (This draft got kind of lost, you see…)
