Be An Animal!

wide.jpg

Well, it is about time somebody stood up and said it! And perhaps many have. Coming out of the surf today I thought back to all the years I use to ‘hate’ swimming in the ocean. “I don’t like that salt water in my eyes”, I’d say. “I don’t like the sticky salting feeling on my skin”, I’d whine. Thinking and saying that nailed down a self fulfilled prophecy. How nice it is to have gradually returned to being an animal after all those years of believing I was a human. As words and names become simply sound in this animal’s ears, they have much less chance to get in my way.

Having It Your Way at Marini’s

Every once in a while, you experience a windfall of genius that leaves you almost breathless. Often, when we play on Pacific Avenue, we see that Marini’s is having a two-for-one special: two slices of pie for the price of one, two ice-cream cones, two cotton candies, etc. Every once and a while, it’ll be two coffee drinks for the price of one. Now, Marini’s has some delicious coffee drinks, like the Milky Way, which is a mocha-caramel drink with whipped cream and a slice of fudge on the rim. Heaven, except… I don’t like coffee. Twice, I joined Kyle and Papa in splitting two of these coffee drinks. I tried my best to enjoy them, but it was like having liver with your strawberries. Hard to enjoy the one in the presence of the other.

So, back to these windfalls of genius. … Continue reading ‘Having It Your Way at Marini’s’

I am sooo Mature!

Today, we went down to the beach for our usual Yoga & Tai Chi/Karate routine. However, as Pa and Luke were doing Tai Chi and I was doing Karate Katas, a guy came up behind me and … Continue reading ‘I am sooo Mature!’

32767

In the fall of 2002, I took a physics class at Santa Cruz High School, and was loaned a textbook with an ID number of 32767. I realized that the giddy excitement I felt when I immediately recognized the number as equal to 2^15 − 1, or the largest value a 16-bit signed integer can hold, meant I might be a bit of a nerd.

Playin’ in the Playhouse

Every year for the past seven years, we help put on “The Johnson Farm Picking Party.” It’s held on 92 acres of beautiful land in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The farm was homesteaded in the 1800’s and still looks like it might be of back then. It’s a perfect place to play “mountain music.”

A tradition formed early on. After we arrived and set up, Luke and Kyle went into the children’s playhouse to jam. There, Luke finally coaxed Kyle into playing some fiddle tunes, instrumentals that Kyle strongly dislikes. It was another year before Kyle played another fiddle tune, and that was at the next Johnson Farm party. Since then, they’ve been doing the same thing every year. As you see, other friends join in too.

Helicopter Soccer… Only in Santa Cruz

Pickles: A Timeless Adventure

pickle-garden.jpgThere’s something great about something pickled. It makes a great gift. There’s something automatically presentual about a jar. You can easily put a bow knot or stick a card on it. (something you can’t normally do with food) Also, it’s preserved so you can put it on your shelf for a while for presentation points. A very attractive pickled vegetable has to be pickled cucumbers (I.e, pickles!). Especially when the brine is very light and clear. Clear brine accentuates the pickles and gives it a very pleasing feel. Dark brine is a tad disgusting.

pickle-dirt.jpgNow, I’ll tell you my personal 3-4 year experience in making pickles and also show you how to make your own!… Continue reading ‘Pickles: A Timeless Adventure’
