Is it a pelican or a pterodactyl?

Pelicans are fascinating to watch fly by. They look so much like pterodactyls to me!

  • I did see Jurassic Park but don't recall that. But, I was struck by how duck like (we have ducks) they depicted the dinosaurs. Made it all much more realistic feeling, especially given the science of birds evolving from dinos.

I love the pelican, I always root for the underdog. When I go to the coast I watch seabirds dive in the water for fish. They look so graceful and aerodynamic as they slip into the water with hardly a splash. Then along come the lumbering pelican and with a plop he falls into the water. It would be wrong to call it a dive, more like a controlled crash, but hey, it works for him because he usually comes up with the fish.

Now when the humble pelican 'lands' in the water, that is a different matter. He spreads those huge wings and glides down to a near picture perfect landing.

As far as being a pterodactyl, did you ever see the end of Jurassic Park ? they show pelicans flying
