I had a great idea today. Now you may be saying, “Well, so what? You say that every week.” Well, yes but this time I’m being semi-sarcastic.
As you can see, we’ve got a nice pond (made from dirt, rock and a horse trough) which the ducks swim in. However, it needs to be changed every week ’cause the water gets pretty foul looking/smelling. When it’s time to drain it, we connect a hose to the nozzle on the trough, release the valve and then let the water flow on the dry parts of the grass. Efficient!

Well, today I thought of something grand. I thought, why not use the water to water my lime tree on the hill. Now, I already know that water doesn’t naturally flow upwards, but I remembered when we would empty the fish tank (when we had fish tank), we’d put one end of the hose in the tank, then the other end was in a bucket. then middle of the hosed was higher than the end that was in the tank but we managed to get the water to flow up through siphoning.
“Well, if it worked there, it should work here!” I thought. So I connected the hose to the trough and then put the other end on the lime tree and then let ‘er rip. Of course, no water flowed. After wiping the edge of the pipe (who knows what kind of microscopic things live on the end of a hose), I sucked rather softly just to get a feel for it. Next time, I sucked a bit harder. Nothing was coming through, so I sucked as hard as I could, hoping to hear the water run through so I could get my lips off just in time. Well, I never heard it and ended up with a mouthful of soupy water. Needless to say, I didn’t swallow. Plus! Only a few drops came out after!
Papa then reminded me that the end of the hose has to be lower than the body of liquid that I wanted drained.
